I am a clinical psychologist with specialties in Motivational Interviewing, college student mental health, substance use disorders, and suicide prevention. I have provided clinical supervision and training to a range of professionals in a variety of settings including the Veterans Administration and various colleges and universities. I have provided consultation to research initiatives in the areas of Motivational Interviewing and Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy, as well as conducting my own research and developing impactful initiatives in the areas of suicide prevention, veteran mental health, and substance abuse. I am also a motivational interviewing trainer who has successfully trained over 1,000 mental health and medical professionals. Finally, I have recently completed the MDMA Assisted Psychotherapy Training Course.
Specialities
Introduction to Motivational Interviewing
In a one-hour MI training, Dr. Jerry Phelps expands on the definition of motivational interviewing and introduces participants to the main concepts of MI.
Basic Motivational Interviewing
In this half-day Motivational Interviewing workshop, the main concepts of MI are introduced, including the goal setting and philosophy of MI, basic theory and research, the four key processes, change and commitment and integrating MI into treatment.
Advanced Motivational Interviewing Skills Training
In this one or two day MI training, the main concepts of MI are introduced, including the goal setting and philosophy of MI, basic theory and research, the four key processes, change and commitment and integrating MI into treatment. In addition, participants are given time to practice, role play, real play and get feedback and supervision.
Ongoing Consultation/Supervision
Dr. Phelps is available for advanced MI training and/or ongoing individual or group supervision or agency consultation.

Dr. Phelps has presented Motivational Interviewing Training in various settings including hospitals, city schools, colleges, treatment facilities and clinics. He has trained over a thousand people in Motivational including psychologists, social workers, substance abuse specialists, physicians, teachers, student affairs professionals, career counselors, care managers, nurses, and a variety of students, interns and trainees.
